The Windswift LX is Ryka’s latest running shoe, built around female biomechanics rather than resized from a men’s design. A women-specific shoe form, softer forefoot cushioning, and a lighter build are aimed at making everyday runs and long-distance training feel more stable and less jarring.
Ryka’s core premise is that running shoes should be designed around anatomy, not just cosmetics. Women’s hips sit at a wider angle relative to the knee than men’s, a difference of 3 to 4 percent that changes how weight moves through the leg with every stride, yet most running shoes are simply resized down from a men’s design and never account for it. The Windswift LX’s shoe form is built around that angle instead, with a narrower heel and wider forefoot to keep the foot locked in place through the stride.
Cushioning follows the same logic, with forefoot foam that’s 29 percent softer than in earlier Ryka models (aimed at where a runner’s weight lands hardest), while the shoe still weighs just a light 226 grams. The sole is angled to help the foot roll forward more naturally with each step, and the build rounds out with a grippy rubber outsole, a stain-resistant upper, a padded collar, and reflective details for early or late runs. A contoured insole adds arch and heel support underfoot and resists odor over repeat wears.
Ryka has spent decades as one of the few major athletic brands built exclusively for women, designing and testing shoes specifically for female runners rather than resizing men’s shoe forms. That focus shows up in the numbers, with independent research ranking it the No. 3 walking brand and No. 10 performance brand in the U.S. The real test was whether a brand best known for walking shoes could compete with running specialists like Nike, Brooks, and Asics, and Heeluxe’s independent testing found the Windswift LX performed comparably, potentially putting it on the map as a running shoe that can go head-to-head with the category’s biggest names.
