Suunto’s new Run 2 predicts your finish time while you race

The lightweight running watch also builds training plans around race goals and adds offline maps.

Suunto has launched the Run 2, a lightweight GPS watch for runners training toward a race or personal best.

During a run, it uses your current pace to estimate your finish time and shows how your effort compares with what you may have left. It can also turn a goal, such as completing a marathon in under four hours, into a schedule of easy runs, intervals, and long runs.

How the Run 2 works

The Run 2 brings pacing, training, and recovery tools together in one watch. During a run, Live Finish Prediction uses your current pace to estimate your finishing time, while Energy Sense compares your effort with what Suunto estimates you have left.

For race day, Marathon Mode includes Ghost Runner, which shows whether you are ahead of or behind a target pace. These tools give runners more information to decide whether to maintain their pace, slow down, or push harder.

The watch also helps runners prepare for a specific goal. Training Plan can turn a target such as a sub-four-hour marathon into a schedule of easy runs, intervals, and long runs. Training Zone brings training load, heart-rate variability, sleep, and recovery into one view.

The hardware upgrades

The biggest physical change is the display. The Run 2’s 1.32-inch AMOLED screen now reaches 2,000 nits, more than three times the brightness of the original, making pace, heart rate, and distance easier to read in direct sunlight. Suunto managed to add that brightness while keeping the watch body at just 35 grams.

Suunto also increased battery capacity by 29%. The watch lasts around 10 days with regular training or up to 24 hours using dual-band GPS, compared with eight days and 20 hours on the original.

A redesigned 12-channel heart-rate sensor and updated dual-band GPS are meant to improve heart-rate, pace, distance, and route tracking. Runners can download free offline maps directly to the watch and store music and podcasts for phone-free listening.

Firmly focused on runners who want more data and guidance throughout training, the Run 2 takes a different approach from the recently updated Suunto Core 2, which skips GPS and heart-rate tracking in favor of basic outdoor tools.

For runners who want even more information, the optional Suunto Smart Heart Rate Belt 2 adds measurements such as ground contact time, vertical movement, flight time, and left-to-right balance.
