Nike launched its first neuroscience-informed footwear line with: the Mind 001 mule and Mind 002 sneaker. The shoes feature underfoot sensory stimulation rather than traditional performance tech, designed to help athletes center themselves before and after competition.

The Nike Mind 001 and Mind 002 feature 22 independent foam nodes per shoe.
Both models feature 22 independent foam nodes per shoe. As you walk, the nodes compress and move like pistons, creating targeted pressure points that activate sensory receptors in your feet. The sensation increases foot awareness, which can help anchor attention to the present moment, similar to grounding techniques or body scanning used in mindfulness training.
The technology was developed by Nike’s new Mind Science Department, which studies brain activity and nervous system responses in athletes. Using a mobile-brain imaging lab, researchers measured how different underfoot sensations influence attention, awareness, and mental state during movement.
The Mind 001 mule is built for quick transitions, such as post-workout recovery or pre-game preparation in the locker room. The Mind 002 sneaker offers a more secure fit with additional support, making it better suited for longer wear during warm-ups or cool-downs. Both styles use a flexible, water-resistant upper that allows the foam nodes to move independently while holding up to regular use.
According to Nike’s Chief Science Officer, Dr. Matthew Nurse, the Mind platform reflects a shift toward integrating cognitive readiness alongside physical performance. By embedding sensory cues directly into footwear, the shoes aim to reduce mental noise and support concentration without requiring a separate mindfulness practice.
This approach aligns with existing sports psychology practices that use sensory cues to help athletes enter flow states or manage pre-competition anxiety. Nike’s approach builds those cues into something athletes already use daily, turning footwear into a tool for mental as well as physical preparation.
