Google launches Fitbit Edge, its most advanced fitness tracker yet

The new wearable combines a slim tracker design, more detailed health tracking, and AI coaching with Gemini.

Google is giving Fitbit a new flagship.

The Fitbit Edge is what Google calls its smartest fitness tracker yet, combining more advanced health and workout tracking with a slim design, a full display, and personalized coaching built with Gemini. It starts at $179.99 and gets up to seven days of battery life.

Fitbit’s smartest tracker yet

Edge packs more of Google’s health and fitness tools into a traditional Fitbit-sized device.

It can manually track more than 50 workouts, automatically recognize up to 100 activities, and adds built-in GPS with improved location accuracy and an altimeter for elevation. Health tracking includes continuous heart rate, ECG, skin temperature, sleep stages, HRV, and recovery insights.

It also gets Fitbit’s largest and brightest tracker display yet, with 46% more viewing area than previous models, alongside Google Maps, media controls, and call and message notifications.

Between a band and a smartwatch

Google is positioning Edge as the middle ground between its screenless Fitbit Air and a more full-featured smartwatch like the Pixel Watch.

Fitbit Edge pairs a larger display with advanced health and workout tracking in a slimmer fitness-band design.

It keeps the slimmer, lighter design and longer battery life people expect from a fitness band, but adds a screen and more on-device features so users can actually see workouts, health metrics, weather, maps, and notifications from their wrist.

That gives Google three pretty distinct wearable options: something quiet and screenless, something more glanceable and fitness-focused, and a full smartwatch.

Gemini comes to Fitbit

The bigger software addition is Google Health Coach, which uses Gemini to turn the data Edge collects into more personalized guidance.

The coach can build fitness plans around a user’s goals, readiness, and routines, adjust recommendations as those change, and provide real-time guidance during workouts around things like pace and effort. It can also help explain changes in health metrics instead of just displaying the numbers.

Google Health Coach requires Google Health Premium, while some advanced Health Guardian features are also part of the paid membership.
