Esther Sedgwick is CEO and co-founder of Carry — the first weighted vest and rucking community purpose-built for women (launching 2025).
At 39, Esther hit a health crossroads: “I started to feel out of control. My routine just wasn’t working as well anymore.” So she revamped her diet, exercise, and sleep habits to focus on hormone health and longevity.
Esther Sedgwick is CEO and co-founder of Carry.
A busy mom and startup founder, Esther maintains balance through weekly planning and self-compassion: “I give myself grace on the days I can’t mark everything complete, and maximize the days when I have time to crank stuff out.”
Here’s Esther to share the tools and practices that helped her regain control of her health:
“I’ve been a dedicated Peloton user since becoming a mom. I don’t have as much time or flexibility to train and play sports. Peloton helps me maintain my ‘everyday hybrid athlete’ status. I typically take 2-3x strength, 1-2x cycling, 1x yoga, and 2x outdoor classes each week.”
“Walking with a weighted vest (aka “rucking”) that is at least 10% – 15% of your bodyweight is an incredibly accessible, efficient, and enjoyable workout. On hilly terrain or stairs wearing a 20lb vest I can easily get my heartrate up to 165+ BPM for interval training without the wear and tear of running on my joints. I’m now rucking 3x/week for cardio + strength and love the added benefit of being off my screens and in nature. This one is an affordable starter vest if you want to give rucking a try before Carry’s first vest launches.”
“My preferred tracker for heart rate, step counts, and outdoor workouts is my Apple Watch. The integrations with Peloton, Spotify, and myriad other apps and services have kept me a loyal customer for years. I’ve even tracked breast/bottle feeding from my wrist while on maternity leave with my two kiddos.”
“Music helps me crush my workout and podcasts have become my favorite companion for long rucks when I go solo. Spotify premium includes 15 hours of audiobook listening time every month —which has been one of my go-to resources for digging deep on women’s health, hormone health, longevity, and startup advice.”
“Increasing the duration and intensity of your workouts often results in being sore or ‘sticky’ in places. I use this roller to release tightness in my calves, IT bands, hip flexors, glutes, lats, and anywhere else that needs some love after a training session. There are plenty of free videos on YouTube to get you started, and Peloton also has a whole library dedicated to foam rolling.”
“Creatine isn’t just for bodybuilders! Taking 3-5 grams/day can help build healthy bones and stronger muscles in addition to supporting cognitive performance and energy levels. I take it daily, and recommend it for most women 40+. It’s backed by many scientific studies, and also comes in convenient on-the-go stick packs.”
“The ability to order your own labs is incredibly empowering, and Function helps me do that at a reasonable cost. My husband and I are both members, and like to compete with each other for the lowest biological age.”
“Rest and adequate sleep are so important for performance —and temperature is really important for restful sleep. My Eight Sleep system keeps my side of the bed at 0 to -1 while my husband’s side gets down to -5 to keep him well rested. We haven’t argued over blankets or room temp or open windows since getting this system, and it’s gotten smarter over time at adapting to our needs.”
“Hormones play a big role in staying fit over 40. Dr. Mary Claire Haver is a wealth of information and resources for understanding the hormonal changes women start going through at 35+. This book is filled with clear explanations and specific actions you can take to address a wide variety of menopause symptoms.”
“Food is fuel and medicine for our bodies. We can’t feel or best or train our hardest if we aren’t eating mindfully. Author Casey Means MD is a passionate and comprehensive resource on functional medicine, nutrition, and metabolic health. This book helped me realign my mindset on food for me and my family and gave specific suggestions for meal prep and stocking our pantry.”
