From my days running high school cross country to weightlifting during and post-college, one piece of nutritional advice has remained constant — you need protein. It’s essential for:
But, most of us aren’t getting enough protein from our daily diets. Enter the world of supplements — pre-made drinks, powders, and protein bars. The problem? Many are loaded with artificial ingredients and sugar, tasting more like chalk than food.
gramms, founded by Gabriella Flibotte Walker and Sommer Carroll, is taking a different approach by offering a clean alternative to traditional powders.
gramms’ approach? A lemonade-flavored “clear protein juice” made from grass-fed whey protein isolate, packing 20g of protein per serving. But does this fresh take deliver on taste and nutrition? I put it to the test.
After several weeks of testing gramms, here’s my breakdown:
gramms lives up to its claim – it really does taste like lemonade.
During my testing, I tried various preparation methods: drinking directly from the shaker bottle, mixing with room temperature water, and my favorite — pouring over ice in a nice glass.
The flavor profile is intriguing: At first, it’s pretty sweet and a little sour, then you can taste the lemon come through more fully. Finally, you’re left with a tangy aftertaste that may not be for everyone, but I really enjoy it because it makes it taste more authentic.
If you’re a fan of lemonade, Gatorade, or fruity drinks in general, you’ll likely find gramms to be one of the tastiest protein powders you’ve tried. It’s remarkable how they’ve managed to create such a refreshing option in a category dominated by milk-based flavors.
One of my big hangups with most protein shakes is the sheer number of ingredients. Plus, many brands seem to contain things that seemingly have no business being in a drink claiming to help you live healthier. (Why does a drink need to have sunflower oil or corn fiber?)
gramms keeps it simple with just five ingredients:
The macros per serving break down as:
Due to nature of the higher quality ingredients, mainly grass-fed whey isolate compared to conventional whey or plant proteins, gramms is not cheap. Here’s the breakdown:
There are more affordable protein powders out there if you’re just counting grams per dollar. But where gramms shines compared to other powders is its clean ingredients and great taste. In my book, that’s a combo worth paying for.
Gramms specifically notes that you should shake, not stir, and this is 100% accurate. For my first drink, I shaked it in a Hydro Flask which worked out nicely. The second time I tried stirring it and it was simply too clumpy. Warning: Don’t try stirring, it just doesn’t work.
Finally I started using a shaker bottle with a whisk ball and I found that to be the most effective. If you already have one, which you probably do if you’re reading this, then this is the way I’d recommend going.
Increasing protein intake has always been a goal of mine, but finding a drink I actually enjoyed was a challenge. Traditional protein shakes, with their artificial chocolate-peanut-butter-ice-cream flavors, never quite hit the mark.
If you’re like me, struggling to meet your protein goals due to unpalatable options, gramms could be your solution. It’s particularly appealing if you’re a fan of fruity hydration drinks like LMNT or Gatorade. Trust me, you’ll find gramms surprisingly easy to drink.
What I appreciate most about gramms though is its simplicity. When I reach for a protein shake, I want just that – protein. No artificial flavors, no unnecessary additives. gramms delivers with a clean profile: less than 100 calories, only five ingredients, and a solid 20 grams of protein per serving. It’s protein supplementation stripped down to the essentials, and that’s exactly what I’ve been looking for.
