Spotify’s new Running Mode builds playlists around your workout

The feature creates personalized playlists based on your running style, preferred music, target pace, and workout length.

Spotify is adding another fitness feature to its platform. The company just launched Running Mode, a new feature that creates personalized playlists based on the type of run you’re doing. Instead of choosing a playlist before every workout, runners can select their workout type, pace, duration, and music preferences, and Spotify builds one to match.

How Running Mode works

Running Mode is available through Spotify’s Fitness hub. To get started, all you have to do is choose one of 25 preset running workouts, including options like steady runs, intervals, or pyramid sessions. From there, you can customize your workout length, target beats per minute (BPM), and preferred music genres. Spotify then generates a playlist that matches those settings. It will even give you optional audio cues to guide you through the run.

Because the feature is built around the workout you’ve selected, the music is already tailored to your preferred pace, workout length, and listening preferences.

Since launching its Fitness hub earlier this year, Spotify has continued expanding its workout experience by improving the part of the workout it already knows best: the soundtrack. Running Mode is the latest addition, helping runners spend less time choosing a playlist and more time getting out the door.

Where to get it

Running Mode is rolling out now to Spotify Premium subscribers on iOS in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden. The feature is available through Spotify’s Fitness Hub.
