“Training for life”: Inside Liz Plosser’s approach to wellness

The former Women's Health editor-in-chief and current GORUCK creative director shares her approach to wellness and the gear she swears by.

In our Health Stack series, Wellworthy taps into its network of health and fitness experts to offer personal insights and recommendations.

Liz Plosser is 20-year veteran of the wellness world. Currently creative director at GORUCK, Liz previously served as editor-in-chief at Women’s Health and is a NASM-certified trainer. She also writes the Best Case Scenario newsletter, sharing her no-BS approach to fitness and life.

“I’m training for life,” she explains. Her regimen includes four weekly strength sessions, daily outdoor movement, protein-forward meals, and a 9pm bedtime. She starts most mornings with kettlebells and barbells at her local YMCA, waking up at 5:17am (“seven’s my lucky number”) to squeeze in clarity, confidence, and calm before the day begins.

Working from home has only enhanced her rhythm, making space for more family time and long walks with her Bernese mountain dog, Willa. Still, she’s not immune to habits she’s trying to break:: “I need to work on my doom-scrolling and pick up a book instead.”

Here’s Liz to share her go-to brands and products:

Kion Nutrition

About three years ago, I began focusing on eating protein-forward. The transition changed my life: more energy, better sleep, a bigger flex in the mirror. I also added two supplements to my mornings: essential amino acids and creatine. Both are from Kion, a brand that I really respect and believe in because they’re third party tested, free of mold and contaminants, and the team is wonderful.”

GORUCK

“I’ve been a GORUCK girl for more than a decade, which makes joining the team as creative director all the more special and exciting. My OG rucksack has been on my back as I’ve traveled across the world, on hundreds of my “runmutes” from Brooklyn to Manhattan, and it’s even starred in #HearstElevatorSelfies in my former role as Editor-in-Chief of Women’s Health.”

“GORUCK’s gear is incredibly durable, beyond comfortable, and impossibly cool. I’ve recently gotten into the brand’s apparel, too. I feel like I’m eternally on a quest for a perfect pair of shortie shorts, and their Squat Short is The One.”

Canyon Ranch M/Power Retreat

I recently gave a guest lecture on strength training in mid-life at this four-day, three-night immersive program for women navigating perimenopause and menopause at the Lenox, MA location. I also got to experience the retreat as a guest, and was blown away by how much I learned.”

“We got DEXA scans, a robust blood and hormonal panel, attended intimate lectures, enjoyed massages, ate healthy, delicious food, and bonded over the wild ride of careers/mom life. I highly recommend attending.”

Betty Designs

“The founder, Kristin, and I zoomed early in 2025 and I immediately developed the biggest girl crush on her and her approach to life. She’s sporty, down-to-earth, and passionate about making high-quality apparel that matches the fearless spirit of female athletes. She’s also an endurance athlete and a competitive skier (in her 50s!) and I admire her so much. I’ve been wearing the bikini for cold plunging lately, and BDLab’s apres workout sportswear is awesome, too.”

Alloy M4 Estriol Face Cream

Alloy is a female-founded company that supports perimenopausal and menopausal women as they navigate midlife, not only with educational resources, but also by prescribing medication like hormones if needed. I’m tip-toeing closer to that line, but for now, I am a big fan of their newish moisturizer. There is a lot of emerging research about topical estriol, but also? It just feels amazing on my skin and I think it makes it look fresher and happier.”

Apple Watch Ultra

“I started wearing an Apple Watch way back when it launched 10 years ago…literally a few days after my youngest son, George was born. The Ultra does way more than I “need” it too, but it really comes in handy when I’m skiing and want to check the altitude, or cold plunging and desperate to know the chill level of the water. I’ve been known to wear it even to fancy evening events, which our WH fashion director used to tease me about.”

Fascia Therapy

“A good friend of mine, Jessa Zinn, has magic hands, intuition and an understanding of anatomy that combines to release the most stubborn aches and pains after an hour on her massage table. Think deep tissue massage but way more targeted and powerful. She works on many of the Peloton super-instructors, too, so I’m not alone in my obsession. Jessa recently began offering online video courses with mobility work and fascia release you can do by yourself at home.”

Ladder

Ladder is my go-to workout app, and it has been since the pandemic days. My friend, Lauren Kanski, is one of the founding trainers. She leads a team of thousands of people virtually though five workouts a week. I love not having to think about what my programming should be on a given day, or when it’s time to take a deload week. And best yet, I’ve steadily built up my deadlift to a 255-pound PR. Proof that consistency–and Ladder–are the real deal.”
