ZBiotics launches Sugar-to-Fiber: A genetically engineered probiotic drink mix

Addressing fiber deficiency with biotechnology.

The Drop: Biotechnology company ZBiotics has introduced Sugar-to-Fiber Probiotic Drink Mix, the first genetically engineered probiotic designed to convert dietary sugar into prebiotic fiber throughout the day.

The Details: Genetically engineered probiotics

ZBiotics’ Sugar-to-Fiber product aims to tackle the widespread fiber deficiency in American diets. An estimated 95% of Americans fail to meet the daily recommended fiber intake of 25 to 35 grams.

The genetically engineered probiotic in Sugar-to-Fiber converts sucrose into levan, a type of prebiotic fiber. This approach addresses not just fiber quantity, but also fiber diversity and provides a slow-release mechanism for supplementation.

“When done responsibly and transparently, genetic engineering has endless applications, delivering effective products that perform the exact function they are designed to do,” says Zachary Abbott, PhD, ZBiotics co-founder and CEO. “We are ‘proudly GMO.'”

Potential benefits of increased fiber intake and a healthier microbiome include improved digestion, enhanced immune function, and better nutrient utilization.

Sugar-to-Fiber is ZBiotics’ second product, joining their Pre-Alcohol Probiotic Drink designed to break down an unwanted byproduct of alcohol.
