TofuGo turned a centuries-old Sichuan tofu snack into a shelf-stable protein bar

12g of plant-based protein, zero sugar, and a format that takes tofu out of the fridge.

Tofu has never really had a place in the protein snack aisle, but we’ve officially made it there. TofuGo has launched a shelf-stable tofu bar modeled on dougan, a traditional pressed and marinated tofu snack that’s been eaten in Sichuan, China for generations. Each bar delivers 12g of protein and zero grams of sugar in a savory, umami-forward format.

What’s in the bar

For a protein bar, the ingredient list is shockingly short. TofuGo uses tofu as its protein base, which provides all nine essential amino acids—a rarity among plant-based snacks. They also feature water, soybeans, spice, salt, and soy sauce (the Spicy Chili adds Sichuan peppercorn). Beyond that, a few things worth noting:

  • There are no sweeteners, coatings, or protein isolate blends.
  • The bars are shelf-stable with no refrigeration needed
  • The brand describes the texture as dense and chewy, which makes sense for a savory experience

The two current flavors are:

  • Soy BBQ: Smoky, soy-forward, and deeply savory
  • Spicy Chili: Layered heat with Sichuan peppercorn

Most protein bars are built around a protein isolate base, sweetened and shaped into something that resembles a candy bar. TofuGo is a fundamentally different format. The protein source is the flavor, not something being masked by it.
