Mitome brings the lab home to track cellular aging

A first-of-its-kind test, and a new way to track longevity.

Mitome, a new biotech company founded by biochemist Chris Masterjohn, PhD, just did something that was previously limited to advanced research labs — it brought mitochondrial testing to the living room.

The brand’s new at-home test gives consumers a direct look at their cellular energy production and how it impacts their long-term health span.

A new metric for longevity

The process is designed to be seamless: users perform a non-invasive cheek swab at home and follow the kit’s instructions to freeze and ship the sample. Once mailed back, users receive a functional scorecard centered on a proprietary MitoScore, which ranks overall mitochondrial health, and two key biological indicators:

  • Respiratory Chain Activity: Measures how efficiently specific protein complexes are converting fuel into energy.
  • Mitochondrial Mass: Tracks the density of mitochondria in your cells (via Citrate Synthase) to interprett quantity versus quality.

Optimization meets visibility

The goal isn’t to diagnose, but to understand biological processes and track patterns — specifically how environmental, nutrition, and lifestyle factors change function.

“When people can analyze how their mitochondria are functioning, they can make more informed decisions about how to support cellular energy in ways that influence aging,” says Masterjohn.
